Pop Up Junior Run Group Springs Into Action
After the recent success of the ‘GO TRI’ Triathlon event at Rothwell Leisure Centre, Leeds City Council and Run Leeds have been hard at work setting up a new junior run group for 12-16 year olds. The session is a first of its kind for the 17 council run leisure centres across the city and will sit alongside a Junior Cycle and Swimfit session, on a Tuesday afternoon after school.
With the World Series Triathlon event coming to the very heart of Yorkshire this development presents a chance for youngsters in the area to have a go at the sport. The outer south area of the Leeds is currently being trialled due to an oversubscription in the junior membership at local Tri clubs including Wakefield and Leeds & Bradford.
Neil Jones, Active Sport Officer, gave his thoughts…
‘It’s a fantastic opportunity for young people to get involved in the 3 disciplines of Triathlon’.
David Harris, Rothwell Leisure Centre manager, echoed this sentiment…
‘This is an opportunity for local children, of all abilities, to participate in the sport in a safe environment with qualified coaches. Rothwell Leisure Centre are delighted to be able to provide this opportunity to the wider community and who knows maybe the Gold medal at the 2020 or 2024 Olympics will go to someone that started right here!’
With more ‘GO TRI’ events planned to be delivered alongside British Triathlon across the city in the build up to next year’s grand finale, Rothwell Leisure centre are opening its doors for young people to train in a safe, accommodating and fun environment.
Begin with 45 minutes of running at 3:30pm followed by consecutive Studio Cycling and Swimfit classes at 16:30 and 17:15 respectively. All sessions are led by qualified leaders, instructors and trainers.
