Running for Skye 2016

Jordan Kelly

After last year’s success in raising over £2500 for cancer charities, Running for Skye will take place again this Valentine’s Day.

Run, hop, skip or jump your way around the 5k course, filled with family friendly fun. Fancy dress encouraged!

Rewind a year and February 14th 2015 saw the first Running for Skye Charity 5k take place in Middleton Park, Leeds. The run was organised by Skye’s family, raising money for cancer charities Candlelighters and Delete Blood Cancer.

The charity event came about after baby Skye was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic and Myeloid Leukaemia, two rare forms of the disease.

Since last year’s event Skye has sadly passed away, after her brave battle with illness.

Amelia Sockett, 45, Skye’s Grandmother and organiser of Running for Skye said:

“This is the first event without Skye, this years will be in loving memory of her. Last year we raised so much and the day was so special we are hoping for more of the same this time around.”

Skye’s grandmother and other family members set up a stall in White Rose Shopping centre on January 30th. The stall was there all day and had numerous small items for sale such as hats and pictures frames, with all donations going to the two charities.

The stall had huge posters either side of it promoting the February 14th event. Just one of the many ways organisers are trying to ensure as many people as possible attend this year’s fun run.

Running for Skye will once again take place at Middleton Park in Leeds on February 14th. The 5k start time will be 11:15am but the fun will begin from 10:30 onwards.

So pull out your best fancy dress and come along for a fun filled day, in loving memory of a brave little girl.
