Club of the Month – Rothwell Harriers

Rachel Atherton

Club Information:

On Monday nights we occasionally meet at John Charles Stadium at 6pm for a track session, but are other main session are a Tuesday interval session at 6:30pm meeting at Oulton Sports Club and a group run on Wednesdays at 6:30pm from Oulton Sports Club.

How the club started:

The club started approx. late 80’s and was based at Rothwell Leisure Centre for almost 30 years.

Interesting or fun fact/info about the club or its members:

The club logo is of a wild boar, such is the legend that the last wild boar in England was roaming around Rothwell and so it was adopted.  We now have a club mascot (wild boar stuffed toy) that was named Kevin by the juniors in the club.

Jane Tomlinson was a member for many years up to her passing and the well known and very popular Canal Run (5k race) was named after her.

How the club responded to covid-19:

Covid-19 stopped training in its tracks for almost 3 months.  Training has re-started in small groups who are led by our amazing run leaders and coaches.  We have had up to 14 groups of 6 on a Wednesday evening and even 5 groups for interval training on a Tuesday.

The chair has posted weekly videos since lockdown began explaining the latest news on club matters and helpful training advice.  One of our run leaders has also provided members with virtual training sessions and fun treasure hunts, core workouts and quizzes each week.

5 words to describe the club or club motto:

Running and athletics for all
